The Curaçao Ostrich Farm is one of the biggest breeding farms outside Africa. There is a special incubation facility for the eggs because believe it or not: Curaçao is too humid to get the eggs to hatch. There is a nursery for the ostrich babies where they are grouped together according to age and size. And once they are big enough they get to go and play outside with the big birds.

Speaking of ostriches…did you know that:

... ostriches do not stick their heads in the sand?
Everybody knows the story of how ostriches stick their heads in the sand when something scares them. This is absolutely not true. What is true is that an ostrich hides from danger by throwing himself to the ground with a streched neck. The big bird will camouflage as a pile of sand. But when danger approaches the ostrich will jump up and run away.

... ostriches love golden earrings?
Ostriches are very interested by anything that glitters or shines. So make sure to take your earrings off before you feed them because in less than a blink they will have taken them from you.

... ostriches go a long way back?
The most ancient fossil ever found dates back some 50 - 60 milion years ago. Since the beginning of time ostriches have left their mark behind. The Egyptians used ostrich eggs for the production of a variety of goods. In Roman times a roast ostrich was considered a delicacy only presented to kings and emperors.

…the Curaçao Ostrich Farm has been in business since 1995?
The climate of the island of Curaçao is very suitable for the breeding of ostriches. The Curaçao Ostrich Farm keeps over 600 birds these days.

… an ostrich egg has an incredibly strong shell?
You can place your full weight on the egg of an ostrich without breaking it. If you don’t believe it then go to the Curaçao Ostrich Farm and see it with your own eyes or better yet try it yourself!

…the size of an ostrichbrain is smaller than the size of his eye?
An ostrich does not belong to the nerds among the animals in the animal kingdom. For example take a look around at the Curaçao Ostrich Farm: the young birds are in the nursery divided by low cement walls. As they grow bigger they could easily jump these walls but they don’t because they simply do not think of it.
